In the early 1920s the American Museum of Natural History sent Roy Chapman Andrews deep into Mongolia at the head of its Central Asiatic Expeditions. This is his account of those first motorcar journeys: racing antelope across the steppe, camping among nomads, and probing the Gobi for the fossils that would soon make the expedition famous.
Part adventure, part field naturalism, it captures a vast country at a hinge moment: still governed by old customs, yet about to be opened up by the automobile and the age of exploration Andrews came to embody.
