The expedition's western base — the basin of a shallow 'White Lake' in the Valley of the Lakes, northeast of the Gobi Altai. This is Taatsiin Tsagaan Nuur (Тацын цагаан нуур), in present-day Bayankhongor; the fossil beds nearby — the Hsanda Gol and Loh formations at Loh — yielded the giant Baluchitherium in 1922.
